Ultrasound Examination

We can also examine and visualize the breast and armpit through ultrasound. After a mammogram, we often use ultrasound to further examine the breast and armpit. Ultrasound utilizes high-frequency sound waves to create images of breast tissue, providing insights into the nature and structure of breast glandular tissue and any abnormalities. Sometimes, this can provide additional information. "Echo" means 'sound reflection,' and "graphy" means 'imaging.'

The ultrasound examination is performed by the radiologist after reviewing and discussing your mammogram results with you. The examination typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes. You will lie on the examination table and gel is applied to the skin to conduct the sound waves effectively. A device called an echotransducer emits high-frequency sound and is moved over the skin of the breast to create images. The echotransducer emits sound waves, and the (ultra)sound it emits is reflected by structures in the breast and then received again. Different tissues reflect the sound slightly differently, and images are created from the reflected sound. Ultrasound is inaudible and completely harmless; you cannot feel or see it. The examination is entirely painless. This is the same type of ultrasound used in pregnancy scans.

According to the guidelines in the Netherlands, mammography is recommended as the first-choice examination for women over the age of 30. Mammography provides valuable insights into early-stage breast abnormalities and the detection of calcifications. We prefer the combination of 3D mammography supplemented with ultrasound because it offers the highest level of certainty regarding existing breast abnormalities.

For women under 30 years of age, we will only examine the breast through ultrasound imaging, as the risk of breast cancer is very low in this age group.

For women over 30 years of age, we typically recommend the first-choice examination according to the guidelines, which is mammography. We work with specialized technologists who will ensure a comfortable and nearly pain-free examination with personal attention and in consultation with you. However, if you would rather not undergo a mammogram, you can choose to have an ultrasound alone at our clinic. An ultrasound can also be requested by yourself without a referral.
